Principal’s Message

Welcome to the École Armstrong Elementary Learning Community!

Dear École Armstrong Elementary School Families,

I trust you all had a wonderful and fun-filled summer with family and friends and that you were able to enjoy our amazing city in the glorious sunshine.

The staff and I are extremely excited to open our school doors and welcome back our students and families for this 2019/2020 school year.

School will begin Tuesday, September 3, 2019.  I feel privileged and look forward to, once again, serving the Armstrong students and their families, as well as our staff and community. Our school has a rich and deep tradition of respect, care, and commitment to learning.

I strongly believe that our Armstrong Staff are extremely fortunate and blessed to be in a profession of service to others. The vocation of teaching and caring for students in  public education is filled with endless moments of sharing in a child’s wonder, amazement and excitement around learning.  Children will have the understanding and knowledge that she/he is cared for deeply and will be treated with the respect, dignity and care she/he deserves and is entitled to.

Each student will be afforded the opportunity to learn according to her/his individual and unique learning style with the knowledge that they are always the ‘lens’ through which we make all of our decisions and they can feel secure that every adult who works at Armstrong models the same virtues and values we expect from our students.  Most importantly, they can know that every single adult at Armstrong BELIEVES in every single student and her/his potential to be a LEADER.

On the morning of the first day of school your child will walk through our doors; our new Kindergarten students wide-eyed and extremely excited to begin school; our brand new Grade 1 – 7 students who have this summer, left neighbourhoods, schools and friends and will walk through our doors with either some doubt, hesitation and/or wonder about what Armstrong is all about; and approximately 350 returning students eager to reestablish friendships, make new friendships, say hello to staff and continue their journey of learning.

This 2019/2020 school year bring with it the conclusion of our seismic upgrade project for our school.  Not only is our school safe in the event of an earthquake there are also many upgrades throughout the school.  New LED lighting, flooring, windows and even a new library.  The school seismic work is scheduled to be completed by the end of October.  In addition, we are very excited about continuing to focus on our School Plan for Learning. Our school-wide goals will continue to focus on writing and Social Emotional Learning.

Whether new or returning, the common thread for each and every child who walks through our doors is the desire and excitement to learn, to hope, to experience new possibilities, to accomplish new things, to make new friends, to be respected, to feel safe and welcomed – to dream!

Together as a community we make a difference. The impact we all have on our students is profound. Our individual and collective actions and words have the power to lift spirits and inspire a child to feel she or he matters and is important in this world.

Without exception, our teachers and support staff care deeply for the students and their families, our school community as well as our outstanding profession. They are extremely excited and eager to begin this school year.

On behalf of our entire staff, I would like to thank you all for your commitment, support and trust in our staff and school community.

I look forward to the journey ahead of us that is the 2019/2020 school year!

I wish you all a healthy, joyful, fulfilling and successful school year!

Mr. F. De Vita
